National Journal is hiring a congressional correspondent for NJ Daily, one of Washington’s most influential politics and policy publications covering Capitol Hill and the White House.

National Journal is a premier research and insights company committed to helping organizations effectively navigate Washington. Best known as one of Washington’s most trusted media brands for more than 50 years, our expertise is unmatched with teams of specialists dedicated to government affairs, communications, and political research, in addition to exceptional journalism. Our mission is to equip the thousands of government and business leaders in the nation’s capital with the intelligence, insights, and connections they need to save time, increase efficiency, and deliver success.

The Role:

National Journal has an immediate opening for a journalist to cover Capitol Hill in a largely general assignment capacity but with the opportunity to delve into specific policy areas.

The successful candidate will report to NJ Daily’s editor.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Covering Congress both on news of the day and on deeper analyses of key issues affecting Capitol Hill.
  • Identifying issues of key value to our readers and being able to explain them in relevant terms.
  • Writing a combination of short quick takes (300-400 words) and longer deep dives (800-1,500 words) each week.
  • Working with reporters from our sister publication, Hotline, on campaign-related congressional stories.
  • Collaborating with other correspondents and editors on larger editorial projects
  • Contributing to podcasts, webinars, and other audience engagement efforts for NJ subscribers

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:

  • Strong knowledge of Capitol Hill and a voracious appetite for both policy and political news
  • Ability to develop sources quickly on Capitol Hill, including comfort with asking lawmakers tough questions
  • Deft, clear, and clean writing
  • Ability to understand and write about complex subjects
  • Flexible schedule that includes working evenings and the occasional weekend
  • Developing original story ideas
  • Ability to meet daily and weekly deadlines
  • Facility for AI usage and light Python coding is considered a plus
  • A demonstrated ability and willingness to learn from and contribute to a team
  • A commitment to nonpartisan, non-ideological reporting and writing
  • A demonstrated desire to excel and overcome challenges
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university

Application Materials: Cover letter, resume, writing sample or 2 clips

Employment Type: Full-time

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $60,000-$70,000

Location: This job is based in Washington, DC. National Journal operates on a hybrid schedule, with employees required to be in the office or on Capitol Hill every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
